Capsicum Burji | Minced Bell Pepper Roast

These days, I am on a lookout for new recipes, wherever I go :D From Mum & Ma-in-law to neighbour & friends, Internet & cookbooks.... and was I pleasantly surprised when I got this yummilicous recipe from my 80-yr-old Grand aunt? Well, yes! :)

She is an awesome cook, I have heard and I was delighted to have lunch with the fun-loving couple a few weeks back. Oh my, I must admit, the passion and patience she has towards cooking, is salute worthy! One particular dish that caught my attention completely was this Capsicum Burji. It looked simple. I could figure, finely minced capsicum and onions, roasted and spiced. My mum made something similar back home, but then this particular dish had something extra that made it super yummy and I just couldn't pinpoint one particular ingredient that went in there!!

After about 3 helpings :P I HAD to ask her the recipe!! The secret ingredient was... Besan Flour/Gram Flour! Oh yum, who would have guessed the addition of besan to something so simple, would make it this yummy! A must try guys... :)

Ingredients
Capsicum - 1 large
Onion - 1 medium
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cumin Powder - 1 tsp
Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp
Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Salt - to taste
Gram Flour/Besan - 1 tbsp
Oil - 1 tbsp

Method

  • Finely mince the capsicum and onions into small pieces.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add in the cumin seeds, allow it to splutter.
  • Add the onions and allow it to caramelize.
  • Now, toss in the capsicum, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and salt.
  • Mix well and allow all the ingredients to blend in.
  • Now, add in the besan flour (you could use a sieve to ensure there are no lumps in the flour) and mix well. Cook on medium flame for 5 minutes.
