Jeera Gobi | Cumin flavoured Cauliflower

Cauliflower is one vegetable that can easily blend into any kind of cuisine from a typical South Indian dish like a Masala Dosa to a North Indian favourite like a Gobi Paratha. This crunchy vegetables tastes best when cooked perfectly, not too soft with a bit of crunch left in it. I love my gobi like that! Cauliflower cooks fast making it a desirable veggie to work with :)

So, today I present to you a simple Cauliflower side, which paired perfectly with my Methi Pooris. The preparation is hassle-free and with the addition of a little gram flour/besan, the humble cauliflower side is elevated to an all new level! Yes, the addition of gram flour does a lot to a dish! Adds in an exquisite flavour and a wonderful texture. Try this out when you want to prepare something quick, easy yet tasty with cauliflower :)

Makes: 1 big bowl
Serves: 3
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cooking Time: 20 mins

Ingredients

Cauliflower - 1 big bowl of small florets
Onion - 1 big, finely sliced
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin Powder - 2 tsp
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Coriander Powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Gram Flour - 2 tsp
Fenugreek LEaves/Kasuri Methi - a pinch
Salt - to taste
Oil - as needed
Water - a little

Method

  • Cut the Cauliflower into small florets, immerse in a big bowl of water and soak for about 5 minutes.
  • Drain out the water and keep aside the florets.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and allow to splatter.
  • Toss in the sliced onions and allow it to caramelise.
  • Now, add in the cauliflower florets, Chilli Powder, Turmeric Powder, Coriander Powder and Cumin Powder. Mix well.
  • Add in a little bit of water, not too much, probably about 1/4 a tea cup. Stir well and close the pan and cook on medium flame for about 6-7 minutes, occasionally stirring to avoid burning at the bottom.
  • Remove the lid and stir once again and check if the cauliflower is cooked to the desired consistency by slicing a floret using the ladle. If it slices easily, its done. Else sprinkle in a little more water and cook for another few minutes.

  • Finally add in the gram flour. You could use a sieve to ensure there are no lumps in the gram flour while you add it in.
  • Mix well, garnish with some kasoori methi/fenugreek leaves and serve warm!

  • Serve it as a side with Rice and Dal, Chapathis or with Methi Pooris as i did :)
